People always ask me what I think of the DM girls (specifically Maddie) and why I say she’s not as good as other little dancers, so I’ll use this video to illustrate why.
I think Maddie is a ridiculously talented dancer. The problem is with where and how she trains. So please don’t tell me I’m hating on Maddie or whatever because I’m not, I think that little girl is phenomenal.
At iHollywood Nationals in 2011, both Maddie and Keeley Meyers (in the video above) were 8 years old and competed directly against each other (HERE’s Maddie’s solo and HERE’s Keeley’s solo). Keeley beat Maddie, which I didn’t think was right, in my opinion Maddie had a much more mature, advanced and clean dance than Keeley, especially considering they were both minis.
Now watch this dance Keeley performed this year, age 11, at The Dance Awards, and compare it to what Maddie is being given to work with. Clearly Keeley has improved and matured, and is given new and refreshing choreography that challenges her and pushes her to get better every year, whilst Maddie has barely learned any new tricks and is pretty much given the same choreography she had when she was 8 years old.
The point I’m trying to make is, what makes a great dancer is 50% the dancer’s hard work and talent, and 50% what the dancer is given to work with. Compare these two girls who were almost at the same level when they were 8 years old (I still believe Maddie was better than Keeley at the time), and look at them 3 (almost 4) years later, how much each of them has grown and progressed, and tell me that I’m wrong when I say Abby is pushing her kids back.
